Van de kortere reizen maken we een fotoverslag in plaats van een blog. Dit is een korte impressie van wat u zoal ter plaatse kunt doen aangevuld met wat praktische informatie. Aangezien we enkel de plaatsen beschrijven waar we zelfs geweest zijn is dit geen volledig overzicht van alle toeristische mogelijkheden. Onze fotoverslagen zijn 2-talig (Nederlands en Engels). Wij hopen dat onze fotoverslagen u zullen inspireren.

Alle plekken bezocht met een huurauto en vanuit onze vaste appartementen in Costa Adeje (2016) en La Tajita (2018)
1. Playa La Tajita & Montana Roja
Playa La Tajita: Klein dorp met diverse nieuwe appartementen en een winkelcentrum met een leuk koffiezaakje en een goed Indiaas restaurant. Hoewel dichtbij het vliegveld hoor je de vliegtuigen nagenoeg niet. Het dorp heeft een leuk strand. Wel is het aan deze kant van het eiland vaak erg winderig. Van La Tajita kun je naar El Médano wandelen. Aan het einde van het strand ligt Montana Roja; een kleine berg die je ook kunt beklimmen. De wandeling omhoog duurt ongeveer een half uur. Vanaf de top heb je een mooi uitzicht over de omgeving en het vliegveld.
2. El Médano: Dankzij de bijna altijd aanwezige wind een paradijs voor wind- en kite surfers met hippie-achtige atmosfeer. Het plaatsje is een stuk kleiner dan de grote toeristencentra aan de zuidkant. Wij vinden het een heerlijke plaatsje.
3. Vilaflor: Leuk klein dorpje in de bergen langs de route van El Médano naar El Teide. Dit is een prachtige route om te rijden en Vilaflor een leuke stop.
4. El Teide: Vulkaan gelegen in het midden van het eiland. Het gebied rondom de vulkaan is een bijna buitenaards landschap van rotsen, lavavelden en bergen die 's winters vaak bedekt zijn met sneeuw. In de omgeving zijn vele korte en lange wandelingen mogelijk. Ook gaat er een kabelbaan naar de vulkaan. Of deze in bedrijf is hangt af van het weer. Bij mooi weer kan het er erg druk zijn met lange wachtrijen. Zin in een uitdaging dan kun je ook naar de top wandelen, maar daarvoor heb je wel een vergunning nodig. Deze moet je ruim van tevoren aanvragen.

All places visited with our rental car from our appartments in Costa Adeje (2016) and La Tajita (2018)
1. Playa La Tajita & Montana Roja
Playa La Tajita: Small village with many new appartment blocks and a shopping centre with a nice coffee shop and a good Indian restaurant. Although near the airport you do not hear the planes. The village has a nice beach. This part of the island can be very windy. From La Tajita it's a nice walk to El Médano. At the edge of the beach there is a small mountain called Montana Roja which you can climb. The walk up is about half an hour. At the top you have a nice view of the surroundings and the airport.
5. Los Cristianos & Whale watching
Los Cristianos: Een van de oudste badplaatsen op het eiland en een centrum voor massatoerisme. Het is min of meer vergroeid met Playa de Las Américas en via een lange wandelpromenade loop je zo van de ene naar de andere badplaats. Het is een leuke wandeling waarbij je misschien nog papagaaien kunt spotten in de palmbomen langs de boulevard. Los Cristianos heeft een haven met veerverbinding vanwaar je met de boot naar La Palma, La Gomera of El Hierro kunt. Bij de veerboot is een grote betaalde parkeerplaats waar je meestal wel een plekje kunt vinden.
Tip: Ons favoriete restaurant (misschien wel van het hele eiland) is het Libanese Restaurant Habibi. Heerlijk eten, geweldige atmosfeer en een mooi uitzicht.
Whale watching
In de wateren tussen de zuidkust van Tenerife en El Gomera leeft de grootste populatie grienden (pilot whales) ter wereld. Vanuit bijna alle badplaatsen langs de zuidkust kun je excusies boeken. Je gaat dan met een boot op zee om de grienden in hun natuurlijke leefomgeving te zien. We hebben het beide vakanties gedaan en vonden het een geweldige ervaringen. Beide keer zagen we veel grienden (soms zelfs heel dicht bij de boot). De tweede keer hebben we ook veel dofijnen gezien. Beide keren hebben we vanuit Los Cristianos de excursie gedaan. De excursies vanuit Los Gigantes zouden ook erg goed moeten zijn.
6. Costa Adeje en Playa de Las Américas
Grote moderne badplaatsen met massatoerisme. Maar zoek je wat vertier of wil je uitgebreid winkelen dan kun je hier prima terecht. Langs de lange promenades zitten vele winkeltjes en restaurantjes.
7. La Caleta
Authentiek plaatsje gebouwd om een kleine baai. Eén van de beste plaatsjes op het eiland om vis te eten. Er zijn enkele goede (vis)restaurants met allemaal een prachtig uitzicht. Wij hebben gegeten bij "La Caleta".
8. El Puertito
Kleine baai met inhammen, rotsen en een omsloten strandje. In tegenstelling tot de grote badplaatsen vind je hier geen grote hotelcomplexen en boulevards. De plek, die alleen per auto bereikbaar is, wordt veel bezocht door camperaars die op de nabij gelegen parkeerplaats overnachten. De belangrijkste trekpleister van de baai zijn de groene schildpadden waarvan er zo'n 7 stuks permanent in de baai leven. We hebben ons laten vertellen dat wanneer je hier gaat snorkelen de kans redelijk groot is dat je er één ziet. We hebben het niet kunnen proberen, want tijdens ons bezoek was de zee te ruig om te zwemmen. Wij vonden het een erg leuke plek met een relax "reizigerssfeertje". Jammer genoeg kunnen we het niet laten zien omdat we helemaal vergeten zijn er een foto van te nemen.
9. Los Gigantes
Hoewel toeristisch is de drukte hier iets minder massaal. Het stadje heeft wat leuke winkels, een ingesloten haven met gezellige terrasjes en een fenomenaal uitzicht op "Los Gigantes"; de hoge steile rotsen die de kustlijn vormen. Voordat je het dorp in komt passeer je een restaurantje met een terras vanwaar je een mooi uitzicht hebt. Vanuit de haven vertrekt ook de Masca Express. Een boot van en/of naar het einde van de Masca kloof brengt.
Tip: Naast het veelbezochte terras bij de ingang van het dorp is er ook een veel rustiger plek vanwaar je een nog mooier uitzicht op de bekende rotsen hebt. Rij hiervoor het dorp in tot in het centrum. Op een gegeven moment splitst de weg zich en wordt hij een eenrichtingsweg (de haven is niet ver meer). Aan de rechterkant hebt je een paar straten. De eerste na de splitsing is Calle el Pino. Rij deze weg door tot het einde (is een doodlopende straat). Hier heb je een prachtig uitzicht. De weg eindigt met een klein pleintje dus er is voldoende ruimte om te keren. Wij hebben in deze straat ook telkens een goede parkeerplek kunnen vinden.
10. Masca
Eén van de highlights van het land en dat is niet zonder reden. Het dorpje heeft een spectaculaire ligging hoog in de bergen. Minsters zo mooi is de rit er naar toe waarbij je wel enkele scherpe haarspeldbochten moet trotseren. Parkeren bij Masca is een drama. Er is nauwelijks ruimte en altijd druk. Geduld is hier het toverwoord. In het dorp vind je een paar leuke restaurants. Masca is ook het startpunt van een wandeling door de gelijknamige kloof. De tocht naar beneden is een pittige wandeling (wij hebben hem niet gedaan). Mensen met zwakke knieen wordt aangeraden de kloof van beneden naar boven te lopen. Beter voor je knieen maar conditioneel wel een stukje zwaarder. In dat laatste geval spelen ook de weeromstandigheden een rol. Na veel regenval staat de rivier vol met water en dan is het een stuk lastiger om omhoog te lopen. Eenmaal beneden vind je bootjes die je naar Los Gigantes brengen. Taxi's kunnen je vanuit daar weer naar de auto brengen.
11. Masca Express
De Mascakloof is te lopen vanuit Masca (van boven naar beneden) of andersom. In beide gevallen haalt en/of brengt de Masca Express je naar het einde van de kloof. Heb je geen zin in een lange wandeling dan kun je ook met de Masca Express heen én terug om alleen het onderste deel van de kloof te verkennen. De boot, die vertrekt vanuit Los Gigantes, vaart op gezette tijden en je kunt zelf kiezen hoe lang je wilt blijven. (Mogelijk moet je in het hoogseizoen, wanneer veel wandelaars vanuit de kloof ook een overtocht zoeken, wel een tijd voor je terugreis aangeven).
12. Buenavista del Norte
Gezellig dorpje met leuke terrasjes in het zuidwesten van het eiland. Omdat het dorpje geen grote toeristische trekpleisters heeft vindt je er een stuk minder toeristen. Er hangt een gezellige lokale sfeer. Eén van onze favoriete dorpjes op Tenerife
13. Punta de Teno
Het meest westelijke puntje van Tenerife dat onderdeel is van het beschermde natuurpark Teno. De rit er naar toe kent mooie vergezichten. Vanaf de vuurtoren kijk je vanaf de andere zijde op de rotsen van Los Gigantes. Het is een prachtig stukje Tenerife. Echter omdat het niet groot is en grote hoeveelheden toeristen schade aan de kwetsbare omgeving kunnen aanbrengen heeft de overheid de toegang beperkt. Je zult een bezoek nu moeten plannen omdat je niet meer iedere dag en/of op elk tijdstip hier naar toe kunt.
14. Garachio
Klein stadje aan de westkust dat nog heel authentiek aan voelt. Ooit was Garachio de belangrijkste havenplaats van het eiland maar een vulkanische uitbarsting verwoestte de haven en grote delen het stadje. Het historische centrum bleef voor het grootste deel gespaard en de gezellige straatjes behoren vandaag de dag tot de mooiste van het eiland. Een trekpleister van het plaatsje zijn ook de natuurlijke poeltjes met zeewater die zijn ontstaan in de gestolde lava. Het weer aan deze zijde van het eiland is een stuk wisselvalliger. Zeker in onze winter kan het hier regelmatig regenen.
15. Icod de los Vinos & Drakenbloedboom
Stadje aan de westkust met een goed bewaard historisch centrum. In het centrum vind je ook één van dé bezienswaardigheid van het eiland; de oudste en grootste drakenbloedboom ter wereld. Wij vonden hem lastig te vinden. Wanneer je bij het park bent dan vind je de boom rechts van je (wanneer je met de rug naar de zee staat). Hoewel de beroemdste is dit niet de enige drakenbloedboom in het stadje. Wanneer je een stukje door loopt (heuvel op) vind je er nog een. Iets minder groot maar zonder toeristen en zonder entree te betalen van dichtbij te bewonderen.
16. Puerto de la Cruz
Hoogbouw, grote hotelcomplexen en massatoerisme; voor de kneuterige gezelligheid van de kleine dorpjes hoef je hier niet heen. Puerto de la Cruz is voornamelijk het walhalla voor winkelliefhebbers. Er is een eindeloos aanbod van restaurants en vertrier. Het meest bekend is Loro Park. Een groot amusementspark beroemd om zijn shows met orka's en dolfijnen. Mocht je het voornemen hebben om hier naar toe te gaan kijk dan de film hieronder. Dit soort parken zijn een bron van enorm veel dierenleed, zowel voor de dieren in gevangenschap als voor de wilde dieren tijdens de jaarlijkse jacht waarbij de beste "flippers" bruut uit hun natuurlijke omgeving worden geroofd.

2. El Médano: Surfers paradise with a laidback, hippie-like atmosphere. The place is smaller than the huge tourist centres on the south site. We really like the place.
3. Vilaflor: Nice little village in the mountains on the road between El Médano and El Teide. This is a great drive and Vilaflor a nice stop.
4. El Teide: Vulcano in the centre of the island. The area surrounding the vulcano is an unearthly world of rocks, lava fields and mountains that during the winter months might be covered with snow. There are many short and long walks here. There is also a cable car going up the vulcano. If it runs depends on the weather. When the weather is good it can be very crowded here (long queues). You can also hike to the top but for this you need a permit that must be booked in advance.
5. Los Cristianos & Whale watching
Los Cristianos: One of the oldest beach resorts on the island and a place of mass tourism. Los Cristianos is fused with Playa de Las Américas and via a long walkway you can walk from one resort to the other. It is a nice walk and on the way you might spot the parrots in the palm trees along the boulevard. Los Cristianos has a harbour with ferry connections to La Palma, La Gomera or El Hierro. Near the ferry is a large paid parking which is your best bet for finding a parking lot.
Tip: Our favorite restaurant (maybe of the whole island) is the Lebanese Restaurant Habibi. Delicious authentic food, great atmosphere and a nice view.
Whale watching
In the waters between the south coast of Tenerife and El Gomera you will find the worlds largest permanent colony of pilot whales. Sea excursions can be booked from almost every beach resort along the south coast. A boat will take you out on the sea to see the pilot whales in their natural habitat. We did the trip twice and really liked the experience. Both times we saw many whales and some of them very close to the boat. The second time we also saw dolphins. We booked our trips from Los Christianos but we also heard great reports from trips leaving from Los Gigantes.
16. Puerto de la Cruz
High-rise buildings, huge hotels and mass tourism; do not go here for the cosiness as you can find in the small villages. Puerto de la Cruz is a paradise for shopaholics. There is a large choice of bars, restaurants and entertainment. Most famous place is Loro Park. A large amusement park famous for its shows with killer whales (orcas) and dolphins. In case you are considering going here, please watch the film below. These parks cause significant animal suffering for both the animals kept here as well as for animals in the wild during the annual hunt where the best "flippers" are brutally taken from the wild.

17. Historische oude centrum van La Laguna
San Christobal de La Laguna is een middelgrote plaats in het noorden van het eiland met een oud historisch centrum dat sinds 1999 op de werelderfgoedlijst van Unesco staat. Het oude centrum is autovrij en staat vol met bijzondere monumenten, paleizen en traditionele huizen uit de 17e en 18e eeuw. Ook vind je er tal van bars, restaurants en café's.
Tip: Ga er tapas eten in een van de vele lokale zaakjes
18. Santa Cruz de Tenerife
De drukke hoofdstad gelegen in het noorden van het eiland is een bezoek zeker waard. Je vindt er vele parken, pleinen, terrasjes en grote winkelstraten.
Enkele interessante plekken zijn:
- Fontein op het plein Plaza de los Patos.
- Calle Castillo is de "place to be" voor winkelliefhebbers
- Plaza de Espana; centrale plein met groot kunstmatig meer
- Calle la Noria, vele eetgelegenheden en terrasjes
- Mercado de Nuestra Senora de Africa; een deels overdekte markt met volop keuze aan lokale lekkernijen (aanrader!)
Carnaval wordt groots gevierd en het Carnaval van Santa Cruz is zelfs het tweede grootste carnaval ter wereld. Gedurende deze periode viert de stad feest en dansen de feestgangers gehuld in kleurrijke carnavalskleding tot in de vroege uurtje op de vrolijke klanken van Carribische muziek. Zelf als je niet zo'n carnavalfan is het toch leuk om de stad rond deze periode te bezoeken en wat van de uitbundige sfeer te proeven.
19. Playa de Las Teresitas
Gelegen aan de voet van het Anagagebergte en net voorbij de hoofdstad Santa Cruz ligt misschien wel het mooiste strand van het eiland. Een breed 1,5 kilometer lang zandstrand van fijn goudgeel zand dat vanuit de Sahara met schepen hier naar toe is gebracht. Een paar rijen grote palmbomen maken de caribische sfeer compleet. Het strand is zeer populair en vooal op zon- en feestdagen kan het er erg druk zijn. Achter het strand bevindt zich een grote parkeerplaats waar ook campers mogen overnachten.
20. Guímar Pyramids
Misschien verwacht je het niet, maar zelfs op Tenerife vind je piramides. In tegenstelling tot vele andere plekken in de wereld zijn de piramides hier geen oude vervallen ruines maar kleine constructies omringd door een botanische tuin. Naar onze smaak iets te gecultiveerd en weinig specatuclair, zeker met in onze herinneringen de piramides in Egypte, Soedan en Midden Amerika. De entreeprijs (variërend van 12 tot 18 euro) vonden wij in verhouding te hoog. We zijn dan ook niet naar binnen gegaan.
21. Punta de Abona
Klein winderig vissersdorpje dat nog veel van haar traditionele charme heeft weten te behouden. Voorbij het dorpje aan het einde van een deels door stuifzand bedolven weg vind je de vuurturen.
22. Arona
Klein dorpje weg van de kust met een pittoresk centrum gelegen rondom een schilderachtige 18e eeuwse kerk.
Ferias en Fiëstas
Gedurende het hele jaar zijn er Ferias en Fiestas. Het is de moeite waard om vooraf uit te zoeken of er tijdens jouw bezoek ergens festiviteiten zijn. Hoewel vaak druk bezocht door toeristen zijn de ferias en fiestas nog hoofdzakelijk lokale feesten met veel dans en muziek, traditionele kleding en processies. Ook carnaval wordt op sommige plaatsen groots gevierd (zie info Santa Cruz).

7. La Caleta
Authentic little village built around a small bay. One of the best spots on the island to each fresh fish. There are a couple of good (fish) restaurants with all great views. We ate at "La Caleta".
8. El Puertito
Small bay with lots of coves, rocks and an enclosed beach. Here, in contrast to the large beach resorts, you will not find a boulevard and big hotels. Instead it attracks travellers who stay on the small parking with their campers. The most important attraction here are the green turtles. Here 7 of these magnificent creatures found a permanent home in the calm waters of the bay. We understood that it is well worth snorkling here as changes are quite big you will see one of the turtles. During our visit we were not able to try our luck as the sea was too rough for swimming. Still it was worth de detour. The place has a relaxed travellers vibe we did not find elsewhere on the island. Unfortunately we forgot to take pictures but in case you are curious; here you can see how it looks like.
9. Los Gigantes
Altough also very touristy the crowds here are less massive. The village has some nice shops, a small harbour with some good restaurants and a phenomenal view of "Los Gigantes"; the steep cliffs that form the coastline here. Before you reach te village you pass a restaurant with a small terrace from where you have a nice view. Los Gigantes harbour is also the point of departure and arrival of the Masca Express. The boat that brings you to/from the end of the Masca Gorge.
Tip: Away from the busy viewpoint at the restaurant just before you enter the village there is also a much quieter place with an ever better view. To get here just drive into the village all the way down to the town center. At one moment the road splits and changes into a one-way street (the harbour is very near now). On your right you have a couple of streets. The first street after the fork is called Calle el Pino. Enter this street and drive to the end (street has a dead end). Here the view is amazing. At the end is a small square so enough space to make a turn. We always found a parking spot in this street too.
6. Costa Adeje and Playa de Las Américas
Large modern resorts where mass tourism is thriving. But when you are looking for some serious shopping or entertainment it is the place to be. Along the endless boardwalks are countless shops and restaurants.
10. Masca
One of the main highlights and not without reason. The village is spectacularly located in the mountains on a cliff surrounded bij even higher mountains. To us, even more thrilling was the drive to Masca. The road is winding with some sharp hairpins and stunning views. Once you reach Masca the biggest challenge is finding parking space. The place attracts lots of visitors and there is only very limited space to park your car. Patience is key here. Down in the village are some nice restaurants. Masca is also the starting point of the islands most famous walking trail down the Masca Gorge. The walk can be strenuous (we did not do it). People with knee problems are advised to do the walk upwards (from the sea up to the village). Better for your knees but even more strenuous than going down. Be sure to check the weather conditions especially when you plan to walk upwards. After heavy rains the river can be swollen making the walk very hard if not impossible. If you wallk down the trail ends at the sea where small boats will bring you to Los Gigantes. From there taxi's can bring you back to your car.
11. Masca Express
The Masca Gorge can be walked from Masca down to sea or visa versa (from the sea shore up to Masca). In both cases the Masca Express will bring you from or to the end of the gorge. If you do not feel like going on a long walk you can also book a return ride with the Masca Express and just visit the lowest part of the gorge. The boat leaves from Los Gigantes and runs at specific times. You are free to stay as long as you want. Note that in peak season when many hikers are in need of ride you might need to make a reservation.
12. Buenavista del Norte
Nice village with lovely terraces in the southwest of Tenerife. Because the village has no huge tourist attractions it is less crowded than elsewhere. The village has a nice local atmosphere. It is one of our favorite places on the island.
13. Punta de Teno
The western most tip of Tenerife and part of the protected Teno nature reserve. The drive to Teno is well worth the detour and offers some nice views. From the lighthouse you have a view on the other side of the cliffs of Los Gigantes. It is a very nice part of Tenerife. Unfortunately because the area is quite small and the increasing number of tourist can damage the fragile environment the goverment has limited the access. Nowadays you must plan your visit as you are only allowed to access the area at specific days and/or times.
14. Garachio
Small town with an authentic feel at the west coast of Tenerife. Garachio was once the most important port on the island but a vulcanic erruption destroyed the harbour as well as a large part of the village. The historical centre was mostly spared and nowadays the lovely streets are some of the nicest of the island. Also drawing lots of tourists are the natural pools with sea water that were formed in de solidified lava. At this side of the island the weather can be more unpredictable. Especially in winter it can rain quite often.
15. Icod de los Vinos & Dragon tree
Village at the west coast that has a well-preserved historical centre. Downtown you find one the famous spots on the island; the oldest and largest Dragon tree in the world. We found it quite hard to find. When you arrive at the park the tree will be on your right side (standing with your back to the sea). Being the most famous one it is not the only Dragon tree in town. When you walk a bit further (up hill) there is another one. Although smaller you can see it up close without having to pay any entrance fee and away from the crowds.
17. Historical old town of La Laguna
San Christobal de La Laguna is a medium sized city in the north of the island with a historical old town that is listed as an Unesco heritage site since 1999. The old town is traffic-free and packed with palaces, monuments and traditional houses dating from the 17th and 18th century. The old town also has lots of bars and restaurants.
Tip: Eat some tapas at one of the local restaurants.
18. Santa Cruz de Tenerife
De busy capital at the north of the island is definitely worth a visit. The city has lots of parks, squares, terraces and shopping streets.
Some of the interesting places are:
- Fountain at Plaza de los Patos.
- Calle Castillo is the "place to be" for shopaholics
- Plaza de Espana; central square with a large artificial lake
- Calle la Noria, lots of bars and terraces here
- Mercado de Nuestra Senora de Africa; partly covered market hall with lots of local delicacies (really worth a visit!).
Carnival is celebrated frenetic and the Carnival of Santa Cruz is known at the second largest carnival in the world. During this period the whole city celabrates and partygoers in colorful costumes dance to the happy sounds of Caribbean music until early in the morning. Even when you are not a real carnival fan it is well worth vising the city during this period and taste some of the exuberant atmosphere.
19. Playa de Las Teresitas
Located at the foot of the Anaga mountains and just past the capital Santa Cruz you will find one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. It is a wide almost 1,5 kilometers long beach of soft yellow sand brought here by ships all the way from the Sahara. Some rows of large palm trees add to the Caribbean atmosphere. The beach is a very popular place to hang out. Especially on weekends and holidays it can be very crowded. Behind the beach is a large parking where also campers are allowed to stay for the night.
20. Guímar Pyramids
You might not expect to find them here but even on Tenerife there are pyramids. Unlike in many other places aroud the world the pyramids of Guímar are not a collection of old dilapadated ruins but small constructions surrounded a botanical garden. A bit too cultivated and not very specatacular to our taste, especially after seeing the pyramids of Egypt, Sudan and Central America. Entree fee is also quite high (varies from 12 to 18 euro). We therefore decided not to visit the place.
21. Punta de Abona
Small windswept fishing village that has maintained most of its traditional charm. Just passed the village at the end of an old road often dotted with some small sand dunes you will find the light house.
22. Arona
Nice village away from the coast with a picturesque centre situated around a little church dating from the 18th century.
Ferias and Fiëstas
Throughout the year there are many Ferias and Fiestas. It is definitely worth checking if there are celebrations somewhere during your stay on the island. Although often visited by many tourists the celebrations are still mainly local festivities with lots of dance, music, traditional clothing and processions. Also Carnival is celebrated exuberant in some places (see info on Santa Cruz).
